How To Avoid Error 53 With Your iPhone Repair

The best way to deal with an error 53 problem? Go to a reputable repair company for your cracked iPhone screen and you won’t have to worry about it.

The Guardian broke a story a about Apple a few days ago. It was about a software update that will make iPhone’s with a replaced home button no longer work at all (frequently referred to as a “bricked iPhone”). From the article:

It’s the message that spells doom and will render your handset worthless if it’s been repaired by a third party. But there’s no warning and no fix.

But this quote from the article is EXTREMELY MISLEADING because the statement is incomplete. In particular, here’s what it should say:

It’s the message that spells doom and will render your handset worthless if it’s [home button has been replaced by a third party that messed up a screen repair and ripped your home button cable].

Having a competent and qualified repair company fix your iPhone 6 will not cause this error 53 problem. However, if the repair company you use isn’t great at what they do (or if you try to do a repair yourself), the home button cable may end up getting torn.

The most common iPhone repair is a cracked glass. To replace the screen on an iPhone 5S and above, you need to move the original home button on the cracked iPhone screen to the new screen. But that home button and its associated cable are adhered to the front glass.

Attempting to just pull that home button off can be dangerous and is likely to lead to a ripped home button cable. This is what causes the error 53 problem.

At Jet City Device Repair, we use a special hot plate to heat the home button just enough to loosen the adhesive holding it on the broken glass. This makes it very easy to remove without tearing. By using the proper temperature it causes no damage to the home button (this is hard to do if the repair person uses a heat gun instead of a temperature controlled hot plate).

We have replaced 1000’s of cracked iPhone 6 screens (and fixed over 100,000 Apple devices in the past couple of years). The error 53 issue is not a problem for our customers – even after they update.
