Micro-Soldering Repairs for iPhone, iPad, Samsung, & More

In past year we’ve spent a lot of time and effort developing a few of our technicians into experts at micro-soldering repairs. We’ve sent people to soldering classes, purchased high-end equipment, spent tons of time researching, done a bunch of practicing, and fixed a lot of real-world, broken devices. We’ve become very good at diagnosing and fixing board-level problems because of these investments.

Jet City Device Repair Versus Apple

Is the only advantage of an Apple iPhone repair their control the software? We think so.

Apple has shown they are willing to “break” a customer’s iPhone if fixed by an independent shop. “Break” is in quotes because the phone isn’t really broken – they’re just using their software to punish people that dare to use someone other than Apple to fix their device. One example is the 2016 error 53 “upgrade” (which kicked off the Right to Repair movement – something we support).

More recently, people have been seeing the following message when upgrading to iOS 11.0.3:

Note: Non-genuine replacement displays may have compromised visual quality and may fail to work correctly. Apple-certified screen repairs are performed by trusted experts who use genuine Apple parts.

iPhone repair is a billion dollar a year business (that’s not a typo, it’s billion with a B). Apple wants all this revenue, and they have gotten extremely aggressive convincing (or punishing) people that prefer to use a different company. But outside of their control of the software (and willingness to use that control to harm their customers), do they really have an advantage?

We hate to toot our own horn but since Apple has decided to raise the issue of 3rd party repair quality, we feel the need to respond. The following may sound a bit braggadocios but it’s just the facts. Continue reading “Jet City Device Repair Versus Apple”

Samsung Galaxy not charging? You probably need a new charging port.

Samsung Galaxy Soldering Repairs
A Samsung Soldering Repair

Is your Samsung Galaxy not charging? Or maybe you spend 5 minutes wiggling the cord around to make it work? You probably have a bad charging port.

We can fix that.

Over the past year we’ve purchased some high-end soldering equipment and trained some of our best technicians in the art of intricate solder work. This enables us to repair the charging port on many Samsung phones by simply desoldering the existing, broken charge port and soldering on a new one. This process saves you a significant amount of money on the repair. Continue reading “Samsung Galaxy not charging? You probably need a new charging port.”

Has your iPhone’s touch screen stopped working for no apparent reason? Are you seeing gray bars at the top? Then you probably have the dreaded iPhone touch disease. This is where the solder on a small Integrated Circuit (IC Chip) fails and causes the touch screen on your iPhone to stop working (you will usually see gray bars at the top of your screen, too).

Your question might be, “Can you fix this?”

Our answer: “Yeah, we can fix that.”

Discontinuing iPhone 4 and 4S Repairs

It’s been over 6 years since the release of the iPhone 4S and 7 years since the release of the iPhone 4. We have decided it is time for us to discontinue these repairs for several reasons:

  1. High-quality, reliable parts have gotten hard to find.
  2. Very low demand. In the past month we’ve fixed about 2500 devices as a company and less than 20 of those have been the iPhone 4/4S.
  3. Our core values dictate that we are great at the things we do and that we choose to do things that we can be great at. Unfortunately, with only 20 repairs across 15 technicians in the company there is no way for us to keep all of our technicians great at this repair. It’s hard to be great at something you only do once a month or every two months (especially if the parts are questionable). In addition, it’s getting hard for us to train new technicians on this repair because we see it so infrequently.

For all these reasons, we will no longer be formally offering this repair.

That said, many of our stores do still have parts for these devices and at least one or two technicians that are great at doing the repair. If you need an iPhone 4 or 4S fixed, don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll see if we can help.

What Sets Us Apart

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, “Why is your repair service better than your competitors?”

Let me say that there are other good repair companies out there. But I truly believe what sets us apart is our core philosophy:

To make people’s lives better. Our employees, our customers, and our investors – in that order.

If we create happy and motivated employees, we’ll have happy customers. Happy customers lead to a solid bottom line.

Looking at our Yelp reviews, with a 4.5 or better rating at each of our stores with over 1250 customer reviews, it’s clear this strategy is working.

One Hour Device Repair is Now 20 Minutes

At Jet City Device Repair we take pride in creating a great customer experience. We think saving you time is one more way to do that.

Obviously we work hard to create a super high-quality device repair at a great price. That’s step #1 in a great service. We also do our best to hire friendly staff that can provide this service with a smile.

But we’ve found it’s the little things that really help set us apart: clean & comfortable waiting area, stores located in convenient locations, free coffee & snacks, multiple ways to schedule an appointment, open 7-days a week (most locations), open until 7pm on weeknights, and more.

This not only results in a premier device repair, but, if our customer reviews or the New York Times are to be believed, one of the best overall customer experiences with any business.

To continue improving on that, another area we’ve worked hard to improve is our overall repair time. In particular with the various iPhone devices. This is important for two reasons: waiting just isn’t fun and you probably don’t want to be without your iPhone for any length of time.

Through a series of efforts, we’ve been able to whittle our iPhone device repair from about one hour to 20 minutes!

How To Avoid Error 53 With Your iPhone Repair

The best way to deal with an error 53 problem? Go to a reputable repair company for your cracked iPhone screen and you won’t have to worry about it.

The Guardian broke a story a about Apple a few days ago. It was about a software update that will make iPhone’s with a replaced home button no longer work at all (frequently referred to as a “bricked iPhone”). From the article:

It’s the message that spells doom and will render your handset worthless if it’s been repaired by a third party. But there’s no warning and no fix.

But this quote from the article is EXTREMELY MISLEADING because the statement is incomplete. In particular, here’s what it should say:

It’s the message that spells doom and will render your handset worthless if it’s [home button has been replaced by a third party that messed up a screen repair and ripped your home button cable].
